A private boat for a family with children in Phuket costs from ฿18,900 for a four-hour morning on a long-tail for four guests and from ฿20,900 for four hours on a sailing catamaran for up to 15, for the whole boat with crew. A full day of eight hours on those catamarans is ฿34,900 in the standard season, about ฿5,817 each for a family of six. On eight of the 21 boats in this guide the life jackets fit children from age 4; the three yachts under Horizon Cruises Phuket’s management take children of any age, from ฿140,000 a day. A family of six on Fountaine Pajot Astrea 42 with lunch aboard: ฿53,000

The day from 09:00 to 17:00 to Phang Nga Bay or the Khai and Naka islands costs ฿50,000 from 2 March to 30 November and ฿55,000 in high season, for up to 12 guests. Meals are not included; the menu on board is ฿500 a guest for groups of six or more, ฿3,000 for six. The catamaran has air conditioning and four bathrooms and leaves from Ao Po Grand Marina.

The eight-hour day to Racha Yai or Coral Island costs ฿79,900 from June to October for 12 guests and ฿84,900 from November to May. Half-day and sunset trips on Aurora are not sold in the peak, from 20 December to 15 January.

The eight-hour Coral Island day costs ฿140,000 from November to April for up to 12 guests, with five crew, a Thai lunch, soft drinks and one return transfer vehicle for up to 10 guests. Children of any age are taken and their life jackets are on board, but the rails have no netting, so the smallest need an adult beside them.

Horizon Cruises Phuket writes that what matters more than age is the format: a speedboat is a long, loud, bouncy day for a small child, while a catamaran with shade and a flat deck is close to ideal. What about seasickness?

Most people who feel it feel it on the long legs, not at anchor, and a catamaran of either kind is much steadier than a monohull. Horizon Cruises Phuket advises taking something before boarding, since it does not work afterwards, and staying on deck where you can see the horizon.
